Day 22
This post is going to be one of those eventful ones where I actually went out and did something exciting! I went to my friend Fatma's place for a Turkish iftar. I turned up at her house at about 5.30pm. There were two dinner tables - one inside for the women, and one outside for the men. Quite a few people turned up!
Appetizers were served. Dates, a salad (I need a recipe for their salad dressing, it's amazing!), some bread with cheese and spinach inside, lentil soup with melted butter drizzled on top of it, bread for the soup, something else that looks a lot like coleslaw and some fruit.
Then, the main course came out... It was rice (also another thing I need a recipe for), baked beans (hey, Turkish people make it work!), lamb, chicken and what seemed to be potato and mince inside of a crumb.
Maghrib was prayed and then I helped put to stuff onto plates for dessert... It was baklava and vanilla icecream, yummy! I totally had seconds. We also had tea, Turkish style... You know, really strong in those little glasses and on little saucers. Turkish food is my favourite! I would have taken photos of all the food but I was so hungry that I just dug in, plus people would have thought I was weird.
After that, people started to leave for Tarawih prayers. Fatma and I stayed back at her house for a while as she wanted to get ready and there was a "talk" (sermon?) before the Tarawih prayers however it was in Turkish so I would've been sitting there all bored and stuff.
I drove Fatma and I to the one and only masjid in my town, which is on the other side of town and resembles a small house from the outside. We arrived just in time for the Fard prayer for Isha. After that, the 2 rakat sunnah prayer for Isha was prayed, the 20 rakat Tarawih prayer and then the 3 rakat Witr prayer.
Mashallah, the new imam's recitation is brilliant! Also, I was really happy to see some young children praying as well... Totally warmed my heart.
After prayers, Fatma and I went to the little store at the back of the masjid... It's basically just a storeroom filled with Turkish food, since the Muslim community in my town is mainly Turkish. I bought two packets of desserts such as rice pudding mix and a milk pudding mix.
It was a great night!
