This memorable and timely event laid out numerous examples from the Qur’an and the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Alhamdulillah, we learned new things about the dunya (material world), our Lord Allah Most High, and things about yourself.

Unfortunately, the reality after many Islamic lectures is that we gain new knowledge and we benefit, but often we just return to our normal routine—and our new knowledge leaves us quicker than it came. Shaykh Zakaria al-Seddiki was born into a noble scholarly family and memorised the Qur’an at the young age of nine. His father was a renowned scholar and spiritual master of the Shadhili tariqa. Shaykh Zakaria studied the traditional Islamic sciences with scholars in Algeria and later went to Egypt for ten years and graduated from Al-Azhar University. He has a MA in the Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence and has recently completed a PhD at the University of Sorbonne (France). He is the Former Dean of the Faculty of Qur’anic Studies and Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence at the European Institute of Islamic Sciences in France. Shaykh Zakaria is the Director of La Maison Des Savoirs – a pioneering France based educational institute and is a member of the IIDR Board of Scholars.

Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari, a Hanafi jurist, hadith expert and theologian, was born and grew up in Herat, afghanistan where he received his early Islamic education. He travelled to Makkah and settled there until his death in 1014 /1606. His scholarship was exacting and his output profuse having composed works – a great number being encyclopaedic in nature – on just about every field and subfield of the traditional Islamic disciplines.

About the teacher Imam Tahir Anwar
Born in London, Imam Tahir moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983 and made San Jose his home. Upon completing his religious studies in India, he has been serving as the Imam of one of the oldest masjids in the country, the Islamic Center of San Jose, since 2001. He is also an Islamic Studies teacher at Granada Islamic School in nearby Santa Clara, an institution in its 27th year.

Since August 2009, he is a has been lecturing on Islamic Law at the first Muslim liberal arts college in America, Zaytuna College. He has served on the Human Rights Commission for the City of San Jose for over 5 years, and also as a Human Relations Commissioner for the County of Santa Clara. He also sits on Zaytuna College’s Management Committee as well as other panels and boards.
