In the name of God, compassionate & merciful بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ Peace be with you السلام عليكم
While you're out and about Eid shopping for people you love, think about how your gifts will affect the recipients. Are your gifts helpful? Do they enlighten, educate or emancipate? If you have already bought the perfect present for the faithful fakir good on you! Otherwise, celebrate Eid-ul-Adha 2010 with a few treasures from below...
- A-Z of Ikhlaq for $2.95 (less than £2) on Islamic Bookstore.
This paperback book is colourfully illustrated and follows the alphabet A to Z with Islamic manners and morals. Dua`s (adeyah) and quotes are translated into Arabic with contemporary English, so you won't get lost in translation. It's a keeper! And cheap.
- Spoken Arabic Made Easy for $4.45 also on Islamic Bookstore.
A recent quote by Adbal-Hakim Murad said "It would benefit every person greatly to learn a first language." While you muse over the implications of that, get your favourite masjid-goer a book of spoken Arabic phrases to communicate better. Hopefully they won't misunderstand the gesture. Jaldi! Ya'ani, jaldi!
I'm building quite a Walmart collection of Islamic inspired tshirts. Profound Aesthetic is as decribed, the designs and slogans have a profound effect on your 'ilm (knowledge). If you're after something edgier, try More Cult, MiiM, Cube-Apparel, and the ethical Urban Ummah (featured on Green Prophet).
- Soundvision: Learning About Hajj: Children's pack.
- Do you know an Eco-Muslim? (Zaufishan is one). Send them a copy of Ibrahim Abdal-Matin's acclaimed book "Green Deen: What Islam Teaches about Protecting the Environment". It's a prize keep for information about 'greening' your lifestyle and faith as a Muslim. I got mine!
- Subscribe your manly buddies to Muslim Quarterly, the only Muslim male mag.
This is a cool concept and with a few issues out now Muslim Quarterly is making a stand: We're Muslim men, we have image issues too, we cry but when no-one's watching so back off! Fun stuff.
- And for your mini ones, subscribe to the Little Explorers' Magazine, the first Muslim children's magazine. (My friends' have produced LEM - BarakAllah fikum!)
Issue 2: The Hajj 'zine from Little Explorers. Adorable. |
- Salik Productions: Very trendy but traditional Qur'an, Hadith and Hajj apps for your iphone.
- Rahim Music: Order Rahim's latest album Traveller from iTunes for a friend.
- Register a friend to one of the Islamic Institute For Development & Research (IIDR) Courses. Future events include a Tafsir of Surah Maryam, In Honour of Women, and tickets are nearly always less than £40 so it's affordable. Go on, it's Eid.
- Reminiscing your childhood toys and games?
Don't spoil your children with "Eidy cash", give them a piece of halal toy history from Hawkins Bazaar. Gifts are categorised by price and age so you won't have difficulty figuring out the right present for your handful of joy.
{Remote Control UFO for £15 = awesomeness.}
- Send a nerd a book of poetry by sister Kim Hopson. Buy Traveled Roads With Food for Thought on Barnes & Noble for $9.44.
Alright, that's me Eid-mas bribery done for 2010. I will remind readers to give to charity the equal amount of what they give closer to home.
