The British Academy of Qur'anic Studies (BAQS) presents a one-day intensive course on…
THE GREATEST SURAH & THE GREATEST AYAH IN THE QUR’AN
Surah Al-Fatiha is the opening chapter of the Qur’an and its seven oft-repeated verses act as a summary of and a gateway into the noble Book of Allah [swt]. Al-Fatiha is a du’a (supplication) for guidance and the whole Qur’an is presented as a response to this supplication. The surah asserts the Lordship and all-pervading Mercy of Allah [swt] and brings to light the true relationship between our Creator and His creation.
Ayatul Kursi (the verse of the throne) is the 255th verse of the second chapter of the Qur’an and it illustrates the Majesty of Allah [swt] and His Dominion over the world as symbolised by the ‘Throne’. The Prophet ﷺ recommended that this sacred verse be recited in the morning and evening, before going to sleep and after the obligatory prayers for blessings, to ward off evil and for protection against Satan.
Surah Al-Fatiha and Ayatul Kursi highlight fundamental principles of the Islamic faith including Tawhid and belief in the hereafter and they both contain names and attributes of Allah [swt], which can serve as a a vital tool in understanding the Qur’an
