Whenever someone hears the words Muslim and Vegetarian in the same sentence, immediately their head turns and they say: "What??".
It sounds off, doesn't it? Muslim + Vegetarianism = Islam? Possible? Permissible?
Well it definitely is NOT haram or impermissible, so we can toss that away.
But it's a matter of preference. Of choice. Nothing mandates muslims to eat meat or animal products!
I decided to go vegetarian on August 30th, 2009. Pretty recent, I know. But I did my best to let everyone I know that I made that choice, so I wouldn't give in too easily in the future.
I started out as a Pescetarian. Which is one who is vegetarian but still eats fish and may or may not each dairy and eggs. Now I'm a lacto vegetarian, limiting my animal intake to just dairy :).
Why, you ask? Well, basically because there's no NEED for me to eat animals, so why should I? Plus, I knew I'd NEVER eat enough veggies and fruits unless I got rid of my family's traditional cuisine focus: Animal Protein.
Don't give up on your veggies! They are your best friends! Love em, squeeze em, eat em!
I've learned to love my veggies. Why not? I love veggies, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds and grains!
Speaking of grains, I'm trying not to be a "Starchitarian" and consume too much bread :P. I bloat easily lol.
There's so much creativity in vegetarian cuisine. I truly enjoy it. I lost 2 kilos too just from that swift conversion, surely that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this diet's benefits.
Please don't tell me I need my protein and B12. I get those from the amino acids (building blocks of protein) from veggies and legumes. And I get B12 from nutritional yeast or spirulina :). The protein myth makes me laugh really.
Besides, have you ever heard of anyone suffering from a protein deficiency? I bet not :P.
I'm slowly trying to go vegan (nothing animal related whatsoever).
Also I'd like to mention that today is World Animal Day :). So write your favourite thing about an animal you like and share it with your friends!
I love how chickens bob their heads curiously and are cuddly bodies covered in feathers!

(NOTE: Any info about the disadvantages of meat consumption are mostly based on the fact that food today...is not what it used to be :-\, not that its haram or anything. Of course not).
What do you think of my "conversion"? I think it's the best thing I've done yet and am loving it!

[I'm not here to give you a lecture on farm animal abuse (that's a whole different story), just declaring to the world and getting opinions! No bashing please :P.]
