Adhan: the call to Muslim prayer.
Awra: the private parts of a person which must be covered; for a man this is from the navel to the knee, for a woman this includes everything except the hands and face.
Bismillah/Basmallah: the Muslim expression used to start any job. It means 'beginning in the name of Allah'.
Deen/Din: a term used to describe the Muslim lifestyle; the 'life-transaction' between God and people.
Dua': making supplication to God.
Eid: festival, celebration. -
Eid ul Fitr: the festival marking the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting.
Eid ul Adha: festival celebrating the 10th day of Hajj, marking the historical sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim.
Fajr: daybreak, the dawn Muslim prayer.
Fatiha: 'the opener', the first chapter of the Quran.
Fitna: civil trials, troubles, temptation.
Fitra: the first natural condition of mankind in harmony with nature.
Ghusl: a ritual ablution (shower/bath) for purification.
Hadith: reported sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.
Hajj: the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia which is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Halal: something that is lawful and good in Islamic law (shariah).
Haq: truth, fact or a right.
Haram: something that is unlawful and harmful in Islamic law (shariah).
Hasanat: Plural = Good deeds, good acts of obedience believed to be rewarded by God. Singula =: Hasana.
Hidaya: guidance.
Hijab: partition which separates two things, a curtain. Hijab is used today to describe a Muslim's dress.
Hijra: emigration for the sake of God, emigrating to escape oppression and live as a free Muslim.
Hilal: The new crescent moon - do not confuse with halal!
Huda: guidance.
Ibadah: an act of worship.
Iblis: the personal name of the Devil, also called Shaytan.
