Every Single Islamic & Muslim Word You Heard Of But Had No Idea What it Meant

Throughout our site we use Arabic, Hebrew and 'Islamic' phrases that are highlighted in orange. Usually a translation is provided in parenthesis but here's the A-Z anyway...



Adhan: the call to Muslim prayer.

Ahl al-Kitab: literally translated as 'People of the Book', principally the Jews and Christians whose religions are based on Divine Books revealed to Moses and Jesus.
Akhirah: the next world, next life, a Muslim concept of the dimension existing after death.
Allah: God.
Allahu'Akbar/Ekbar - God is Great. Because he is.
Arab - Anyone born in the Arab Peninsula including Yemen, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait & the UAE. Not a Muslim. Arabs can be Christian, Jewish or faith-free like any other human bean.
Asr: the mid-afternoon Muslim prayer; also the name of chapter 103 in the Quran.

Awra: the private parts of a person which must be covered; for a man this is from the navel to the knee, for a woman this includes everything except the hands and face.

Ayat: a verse of the Quran. Ayat literally means 'sign'.

Baraka: Blessing.

Bismillah/Basmallah: the Muslim expression used to start any job. It means 'beginning in the name of Allah'.


Deen/Din: a term used to describe the Muslim lifestyle; the 'life-transaction' between God and people.

Dua': making supplication to God.


Eid: festival, celebration. -

Eid ul Fitr: the festival marking the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting.

Eid ul Adha: festival celebrating the 10th day of Hajj, marking the historical sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim.


Fajr: daybreak, the dawn Muslim prayer.

Fatiha: 'the opener', the first chapter of the Quran.

Fitna: civil trials, troubles, temptation.

Fitra: the first natural condition of mankind in harmony with nature.


Ghusl: a ritual ablution (shower/bath) for purification.


Hadith: reported sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.

Hajj: the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia which is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Halal: something that is lawful and good in Islamic law (shariah).

Haq: truth, fact or a right.

Haram: something that is unlawful and harmful in Islamic law (shariah).

Hasanat: Plural = Good deeds, good acts of obedience believed to be rewarded by God. Singula =: Hasana.

Hidaya: guidance.

Hijab: partition which separates two things, a curtain. Hijab is used today to describe a Muslim's dress.

Hijra: emigration for the sake of God, emigrating to escape oppression and live as a free Muslim.

Hilal: The new crescent moon - do not confuse with halal!

Huda: guidance.


Ibadah: an act of worship.

Iblis: the personal name of the Devil, also called Shaytan.
